Step and Repeat Backdrops for Red Carpet Events

Step and Repeat Backdrop

If you have ever seen a celebrity give a red carpet interview, you will have likely seen a step and repeat backdrop being used. These are those poster walls of repeating logos and company names that often appear as backdrops during red carpet events or other big celebrity extravaganzas. The purpose behind a step and repeat backdrop is simple: as photos and videos are taken of the stars, a company's logo will unavoidably be captured in the background and thus generate extra publicity. Although step and repeat backdrops have uses beyond red carpet events, their association with such festivities means their use can add an extra dose of legitimacy or swank to your company or event.

Why is It Called "Step and Repeat" Anyway?

The name of the backdrop comes from its original use at the red carpet. As attendees walked past the backdrop they would stop, pose for a photograph, then step away so the process could be repeated with the next star walking by. The backdrops also served as a designated spot for photographers to gather and as a hub for guests to show off the fashions they were bringing. Technically, a more accurate name would be a "stop, step, and repeat" backdrop, but that was deemed a bit too wordy.

Where Can Step and Repeat Backdrops Be Used?

In addition to red carpet events like movie premiers, step and repeat backdrops can find uses at any event with a large photographer or celebrity presence. This includes things like grand openings, book premiers, ribbon cuttings, political events, music launches, sports events, charity galas or fundraisers, and fashion shows.

Since step and repeat backdrops are a form of branding and have red carpet connotations, they can also be used in any event that wants to add extra glamour or pizzazz to festivities. Company holiday parties, weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, birthday parties, or high school proms are all examples of big events that can benefit from letting guests enjoy some high-end excitement.

Why Rent a Step and Repeat Backdrop?

  • Free advertising! Every photo or video taken is another batch of eyeballs looking at your brand. Step and repeat backdrop photos are popular on Facebook and Twitter so you get extra social media exposure to boot.
  • Stand out! Step and repeat backdrops are impressive and eye-catching at trade show or convention booths. Look more professional, attract more people, and be the envy of your competitor's eyes.
  • Popularity! A step and repeat backdrop is essentially a giant advertisement that people want to get seen with and share—what's not to like about that?

What to Consider When Renting Your Step and Repeat Backdrop

A backdrop's height is standard at 8' but width can be varied depending on needs and space requirements. Wider backdrops let more people be photographed at once or for groups to get in on a single photo and will also add a much stronger "wow!" factor to your event. Smaller backdrops are more portable and can be managed more easily in limited spaces such as at a tradeshow booth.

Your logo will need to be small enough to fit in a repeating pattern but large enough to remain readable regardless of how many people are being photographed. This usually results in logos that are between 9 and 11 inches wide and 5 to 7 inches tall. Since ink is more reflective than the vinyl of the backdrop, the logos will need to be spaced out enough to allow for a fair amount of white space.
